relax!!! i give it like... a whole week and the entire school is gonna be lining up to meet you. remember, any cute girls and you tell them that you have a REALLY COOL friend back home that youd like them to meet.
[The best thing to happen to Shujin Academy since Kamoshida's mental breakdown and confession was brought not by any handiwork of the Phantom Thieves, but rather, a lucky streak that set forth a chain of events that took Akira out of the spotlight. A new transfer, from some backwaters town called Inaba had moved into the position of the newest hot topic around school. He didn't really care too much at exactly who it was, but as long as he could walk down the halls without hearing about the scary kid in 2-D who had a criminal record, who was most likely ruining this fair school and its sensitivities, Akira felt rather contented.
The less people had their eyes on him, the easier it was to get around unnoticed. Which was what he wanted. To fade into the shadows so that he could go under the radar for the rest of the year.
Life could continue on- the usual. Stealing hearts, selling treasure, making the big bucks. All the while enjoying time with his ever expanding group of associated thieves. He found himself smirking to himself when he passed a duo of girls who were hushed together, near a locker.
"Did you see him?" "He's so hot. Do you think the silver hair is natural?" "I heard he came from that place with all the murders that happened last year!" "He probably left to get away from it all." "Ah~ It's so tragic." "Tragically handsome."
These sort of conversations became pretty happenstance around the school. He heard rumors that he was interested in joining a sports club. That he held part time jobs already, even just after moving in. There were some more crazy ones, too- like he knew actresses and had experience with getting alcohol as a minor. The typical sort of thing that wasn't even slightly believable, but that's how these things go in school. One little seed of an idea and it gets blown out of proportion.
He checks the popularity rating on the Phan-Site: 16.8%- just as he approaches the courtyard vending machines during free break. And of course, who else would be there purchasing a soft drink but the newest addition to Shujin Academy. Yu Narukami.]
Oh. Hi. The new transfer student, right?
having silver/gray hair but not being old man helps
It was to be expected. He couldn't have stayed in Inaba forever, no matter how much he wanted to. When he stepped outside the first morning in the city, it felt so surreally big and evenings were loud. Nothing like Inaba and its calm nights filled with sounds of crickets. Yu found himself being unable to focus on even reading a simple novel.
His parents didn't dally with applying him to the new high school. It was to be expected, after all, he was third and last year. He initially thought he'd go to his former high school, but they changed the place of living as well so the closest school was Shujin Academy. To Yu, it didn't really matter. Somehow, he wished that his remaining high school days would fly by so he could go do whatever he wanted. Mainly visiting his friends.
Yu, however, underestimated a city school. Sure, there were some gossips when he moved to Inaba, but he figured it was because Inaba was a small place and nothing really exciting happened. But to think that city school like Shujin Academy could gossip like this, weeks on end, was baffling. No one really talked to him, yet everyone talked about him. It was infuriating. So he spent most of his time rushing out of the school and going to his part-time job. The flower shop was cute and arranging flowers relaxing.
And today was especially tiring. He had a run in with council president who reprimanded him about all the gossips and that 'drinking alcohol is extremely prohibited at Shujin Academy'. Being friends with Rise has its weaknesses.
He was startled from his thoughts when a guy spoke up. His face looked familiar but he couldn't say why...]
Ah, yes. I'm Narukami Yu. [He looks at the vending machine and quickly steps back-] Sorry, am I in the way?
[Oh. So it really was him. Not that Akira should've been surprised, but he seemed to have a lot more approachable demeanor than what he'd expected hearing all the rumors. But that's exactly why rumors are stupid- they proliferate a cognition of something that's not true, one that brands you whether or not you like it.
Standing there, now, Akira feels a little awkward. He probably shouldn't have said anything at all, and he can feel Morgana fidgeting against the inside of his bag, almost headbutting him and reminding him that he needs to keep a low profile. But really, who listens to a cat, anyway?]
No, you're not in the way. Hey... I know I'm new around here too, so let me give you a piece of advice... Make sure you check the expiration date on the cold drinks here. I... [He scratches the back of his head, awkwardly looking for the right words to say] Might've gotten sick once already.
Anyway, I'm Kurusu Akira, it's nice to meet you.
[He holds out his hand to Yu, expectantly to shake it.]
[This guy could easily be the first person that talked to him. Properly talked to him, not 'good morning Narukami-kun' and 'teacher asked to see you' things. Like, proper talk, not related to school. He couldn't help but feel a bit happy about it. Maybe he could make some friends in the school, maybe not everything is grey.
He pauses and looks at the drink in his hand-] Huh? Really? I thought they restocked these every week. [That sounded pretty unbelievable. Is the staff around here lazy enough to not restock the items in vending machines properly? He checks the can and sighs. It seems this one is fine.] Thank you for the warning. I'll be careful.
[For a second, Yu hesitates about the offered hand. It brought back memories that he'd rather not remember. But it would be extremely rude not to accept it. With a smile, he shifts the drink in his left hand and shakes hands.] Nice to meet you too. Are you third year? I didn't see you around.
[Considering that Yu didn't immediately look at him weird when he introduced himself must've meant that he hadn't heard any of the things going around about himself. How he's definitely a member of the yakuza. How he's a crime boss. How he's been to jail before. Any number of half truths that indicate pieces of his record were somehow leaked to the general student body. It's... refreshing, in a way, to say the least that the reputation wasn't preceding him at first glance.
And he feels like he should warn Yu that the teachers around here really... aren't the best in the world when it comes to taking care of the student staff. The entire volleyball team could attest to that, as well as a few friends who were the objects of a sick person's twisted desires. But. Well, he's new, and he has this wide eyed look about him that he doesn't want to interfere with. That, and he's really not in the business of making himself seem like he knows anything about these parts. Living a double life was definitely not the easiest thing in the world.]
No... I'm a second year. I transferred here a little while ago from the suburbs.
[He wants to ask if it's rough moving from a rural area to the city, not knowing that Yu was already from Tokyo, but that wouldn't be right for someone he's just met.
Morgana bumps into his neck from inside his bag.
"Hey, idiot. Get your drink and let's get out of here. We don't need to make friends with newbies. It'll only rouse suspicion."
He heads to the vending machine to pick out a sports drink for the time being (checks the label too, just in case).]
Well, good luck out there. Don't let the rumors get to you.
[He looks down at his phone for a second to see it buzzing. Usually Yu just texts, but the fact that the ringer is going off would probably mean that something's up. It's a rather boring day in Inaba- he had asked Chie to meet up with him so he could buy lunch (this was the second kung-fu DVD that was ruined, which didn't really help with his reputation of not keeping property safe from harm), but that was still a few hours off.]
[With the steak in the oven, Yu picks up the phone to call Yosuke. It would be too much of a hassle to type it all out, so calling is better. As soon as he hears Yosuke's voice there's smile on his face. Too bad he's not calling him about good things.]
Hey! I uh, have several things to talk about with you. Can you talk now or should I call later?
C'mon. You know any time is a good time to call. It's not like anything happens around here anyway.
[He looks out the window from his bedroom. Yep. Still dead- which Yosuke's actually come to appreciate, a little. After coming to terms with himself, he realized a large part of his involvement on the investigative team was to escape the dull drag of everyday life in a little town like this.]
[Yosuke is trained in the art of knowing what expression Yu is wearing just by the tone of his voice. He's cultivated that knowledge over the past year, and is has him smiling back to himself.]
Of course you did something stupid. That's the best part of growing up. Nah, I won't judge you. Unless... did you.... Yu, you didn't knock a girl up, did you!?
[Two days pass in the meantime. There's a group meeting the morning after the incident to go over what went wrong- and Akira is doing his best to hide the fact that he has an open wound under bandaging, because he doesn't want to try to explain what happened the other night beyond the perfunctory I got help from someone, don't worry, our identities are still safe.
With one week left until the art exhibition is over, they realize time is coming up short to what they have to do, but agree that some time in Mementos to train would be important, as well as going through the map of the art museum a few more times to look for escape routes, if it ever came down to it again. It also established a rendezvous point- the overpass in Shibuya- if they ever had the unpleasant experience of getting separated in the metaverse again.
Morgana, on the other hand, keeps oddly quiet about the entire ordeal until they're alone. There's a long conversation had about why someone else's shirt was in the room, and why he was hiding an injury- which Akira isn't that surprised he figured out. Some things are inescapable when you're living with another person. The game changer is discussing whether or not Yu is a persona user- which is news to the not-cat, and suddenly the conversation is less about how they should be careful who they trust and more about making sure that he wasn't a total asshole to the guy who took care of him. Morgana even suggests that he does laundry to clean the shirt he "borrowed" - not that Akira wasn't going to do that to begin with, but it was nice to know he was on board with the entire thing.
What Morgana isn't entirely on board with, however, is when that second night comes and Akira says he's going back to Yu's to return said shirt, and he asks his friend to stay home instead. It would be way too obvious if he tagged along, especially for what he was about to do next.
Infiltrate a route to Yu's bedroom window.
He's careful as all hell about it, waiting to make sure that he wasn't home in his room, and snuck back up to the window. Opening it, he carefully places the shirt back on the bed, folded neatly. Adding breaking and entering to his already growing list of felonies doesn't seem to bother him too much. He can hear movement in the house though, which alerts him to start heading out. Carefully, he leaves through the window, carefully making his way over to the fire escape.
And wow, his chest is on fire. Maybe now isn't the right time to start going back into the palace after all.]
[Talking to Yosuke was the wisest decision Yu made in a while. It felt as if boulder fell off his back. His parents came back that afternoon and didn't suspect anything about Yu and his 'visitor'. And since the neighbors didn't ask him about 'young lad climbing down the window', it means no one saw his visitor leave. Which is really good. For everyone involved.
Yu had found the mask when he was cleaning up the plate. He didn't know if the man forgot it or left it there on purpose. So he just transferred it to his writing desk and placed it to lean on top of the shelf. Yu caught himself staring at it when he sits to study and his mind wanders off. It was so simple yet... elegant? Mysterious?
Two days after the incident, Yu's parents are preparing to leave for the business trip again. The taxi was waiting in front of the building and his father was putting the bags in the trunk of the car. Yu stood there, hands in his pockets, listening to his mother tell him about various things. What he didn't expect is-]
By the way, Yu-kun, what is that mask in your room?
[...only now it occurred to Yu that it was stupid to put it in such a visible place. His brain rakes through all the possible excuses that can be believable and grabs onto a straw-]
O-Oh! That's from Inaba! I forgot to unpack one of the bags with gifts, it was there. It's from the drama club, they gave it to me as a memento.
[For a moment, Yu thought it was farfetched but his mother gave him a wide smile and kiss on the cheek. Then, after saying their goodbye's and to be safe, they left. And Yu leaned on the building because it was hard to stand. His legs felt like a jelly from fright.]
[Call it dancing with fire. Call it just plain stupid. But he did leave it there on purpose, and looking back now, maybe it was just so that he could come back and try to steal it. There's a certain air to this troublemaker that likes the challenge, likes the thrill of all of this- even when he's still recovering from a near fatal run in with the shadow kind (Seriously though, why did it have to be a run in with a 6-armed Hindu goddess that had a blade attached to every arm? Why couldn't it have been a faerie or two. He could've robbed them for money and left). He listens in from the open window, a smirk so easily written on his lips that anyone nearby would know that he was up to no damn good.
But he kind of likes it that way.
Yu is quick on his feet, too, which makes this come to a new level of entertainment. He covers his mouth in fear of laughing at the situation. He tries to picture the other breaking a sweat at having to lie to his mom like that (that...was his mother, right? Akira didn't really know, but it was a safe assumption to make).
True to his haughty nature and confidence at being an expert saboteur and thief, he lingers a little longer. He wants to hear Yu when he finds that shirt. As they say, though, curiosity killed the cat.]
[Once his parents are gone, Yu goes back to his room. He should probably study a bit, maybe read even. He's not hungry yet he skips the kitchen and snacks completely.
As soon as he steps in the room, he knows something went on in here. There was a different air about it. And then he spots his shirt. The one he's been trying to find the last two days. With a smile, he walks over and picks it up and then turns to the window. Open. He walks over and peers out of it, looking for any shadows that could reveal his guest.
Not seeing anyone, not even the passerby's on the street, he grins and yells-]
If my guest stayed a moment longer, he could've had gotten his coat back!
[-and then quickly disappears back in and pulls on the curtains. Well, that was a rush he didn't feel in a while. Thankfully no one saw him yell, and hopefully, the message reached the right ears.]
[Morgana greets him back at Leblanc, accusative stares in those cute little slitted eyes that he fashions so well for himself. Needless to say, Akira is still smirking to himself.
What's so funny?
Nothing.
Joker.
It's nothing. Don't worry about it.
Morgana quirks an eyebrow at him.
It's getting late. And you need some rest if that's going to heal properly.
I'm going back tomorrow night. He's my nurse, after all.
Joker.
What?
...nothing. Just be careful. You have to keep your health up. We're counting on you. Not for you to fall for some transfer student just because he's playing doctor with you.
Akira doesn't know what to say to that, so instead, changes into pajamas and falls asleep.
4 days left. Which means two more nights to get to the treasure, and one to send the calling card. Everyone's getting antsy, but they trust him enough to make the decisions a leader has to make. In this state, he still needs a little more time until he's flexible enough to go back into the palace. So when the next night comes, he sets out for what he's planning to do. It's the same route that he took the last time he came- through the alleyway, up the fire escape. He watches to see if there's a light on in Yu's room.
A smarter thief wouldn't play these cat and mouse games with someone.
But there Akira is, leaning from the railing of the escape, a finger crooked under the window's latch. He knows that his parents are out of town, and he's careful to see whether or not the neighbors are paying any attention. Cracking the window ajar, just enough so that his voice can travel into the room, he speaks in a deeper voice than his regular.]
[It had seemed quite a brilliant idea to go along with his Dad's trip out to Tokyo, not only because he got out of Inaba for a while, and if he attended some of the Junes stuff his dad would be happy, but there was also the fact he could visit with Yu. It had been a while, after all. Indeed, things had been going great; He had a nice room, the food was good, skirt sight-seeing was good. All the wonderful pieces of a vacation.
And then the lack of brilliance kicked in. He was sure he could remember how to get to where he was meeting his buddy, without any help aside from a quick asking at the front desk of the hotel, but... Well, he should have printed something off with MapQuest. He'd probably still be lost, but not so lost he had no idea where he was at all.
Which meant he had to finally admit defeat and pull out his phone, hitting auto-dial, and as soon as he heard the voice on the other end, he sheepishly remarked.]
[When Yosuke texted him earlier in the week that he was coming over to Tokyo, Yu almost jumped from the sixth floor of the apartment complex he was living at. From happiness. It's been way too long since he last saw Yosuke. True, he went to visit over the summer, but the days got all filled up with visiting here, going there, and it was mostly with the whole group. He didn't get to sit down with Yosuke and have a nice, long talk.
He really missed those. And the croquettes too.
So when the day for meet up finally rolled in, Yu left the apartment with more time to spare than he needed. Yes- he is excited and there's nothing he can do about it. And after year in Inaba, he's more than comfortable to show it. He was, however, worried about Yosuke. Sure, his friend lived in the big city before, but this is Tokyo. Even Yu gets easily lost if he doesn't pay attention or if he is visiting part of the town he doesn't go to often.
He jumps when his phone rings, and answers after a single ring. And what do you know- his hunch was actually correct.]
Didn't you ask the front desk at the hotel how to get to the train station? [Because their meeting place is just one train ride away.] Is there someone around you can ask for directions?
Well, yeah, I asked. But I think I took a wrong turn somewhere.
[He sighs, looking around. Honestly, whatever part of Tokyo he's in, each block he's been on in the last few minutes looks the same as the last. Which is dumb. Shouldn't the areas by a hotel be easier to navigate?]
No one. It's completely deserted... Though there may have been a restaurant a few blocks back. Guess I can go back and ask there.
[Yosuke wandered off into a residential area? Damn it, it's one thing when a person gets lost somewhere with flashy buildings or something recognizable. This way, Yu had no idea how to lend him a hand.]
That sounds like a good idea. I wish I could actually help you out, but from the sound of it, you are in the residential area.
[There is a short pause as he waits for train to stop and noise die down before he speaks again as he boards the train.]
Try to get back to the hotel you stayed at and I will meet you there.
Yeah, ok... Sorry about this, partner. I'll see you there.
[He hangs up, muttering something about large cities, before turning on his heel to try and retrace his steps. If Yu isn't there when he finally manages, he'll take a seat in the lobby to wait.]

Turn the lights off.

King of the Lost
skirtsight-seeing was good.
So... You won't believe this, but... I'm lost.
no subject
[Because their meeting place is just one train ride away.] Is there someone around you can ask for directions?
no subject
[He sighs, looking around. Honestly, whatever part of Tokyo he's in, each block he's been on in the last few minutes looks the same as the last. Which is dumb. Shouldn't the areas by a hotel be easier to navigate?]
No one. It's completely deserted... Though there may have been a restaurant a few blocks back. Guess I can go back and ask there.
no subject
That sounds like a good idea. I wish I could actually help you out, but from the sound of it, you are in the residential area.
[There is a short pause as he waits for train to stop and noise die down before he speaks again as he boards the train.]
Try to get back to the hotel you stayed at and I will meet you there.
no subject
[He hangs up, muttering something about large cities, before turning on his heel to try and retrace his steps. If Yu isn't there when he finally manages, he'll take a seat in the lobby to wait.]
