[With the steak in the oven, Yu picks up the phone to call Yosuke. It would be too much of a hassle to type it all out, so calling is better. As soon as he hears Yosuke's voice there's smile on his face. Too bad he's not calling him about good things.]
Hey! I uh, have several things to talk about with you. Can you talk now or should I call later?
C'mon. You know any time is a good time to call. It's not like anything happens around here anyway.
[He looks out the window from his bedroom. Yep. Still dead- which Yosuke's actually come to appreciate, a little. After coming to terms with himself, he realized a large part of his involvement on the investigative team was to escape the dull drag of everyday life in a little town like this.]
[Yosuke is trained in the art of knowing what expression Yu is wearing just by the tone of his voice. He's cultivated that knowledge over the past year, and is has him smiling back to himself.]
Of course you did something stupid. That's the best part of growing up. Nah, I won't judge you. Unless... did you.... Yu, you didn't knock a girl up, did you!?
[HOW did he even get an idea like that!? Yosuke is making him laugh when he's supposed to be serious.
He tries to swallow the chuckles and takes a deep breath.]
There is... an alley next to the building I live in. And last night, I ran into a person that had huge cut across their chest. I helped him out. [Pause.] He admitted to me he was a thief.
Sort of. [Another pause.] And he said that... he got injured during a fight with shadows.
[Relief. Yu is way too young to be a daddy. Even with all that level of intense swag, he couldn't pull off entrance exams and changing diapers. Or maybe he could. He is kind of amazing, after all.]
Hah- nah, I knew that wasn't the case.
[He listens to what Yu begins to talk about, and presses the receiver to his ear a little more intently. A thief? A dark alleyway? Injured? This sounds like something out of a manga- until he mentions... shadows.]
What? That's... that's not possible. That's not possibl-- we got rid of the fog! Dude, whoever this is- is messing with you.
I thought the same. But- isn't it a bit too specific? Who goes around and speaks of 'shadows' and how everyone has a 'shadow version of themselves'?
[He fiddles with the pen on the table-] They said that people whose hearts become corrupt make palaces in their hearts. Doesn't that sound like what we faced? Yukiko, Kanji, Rise- when they were thrown inside of the TV, a place appeared. A place that was connected to them.
Only... this sounds way more dangerous than what we faced.
[For a second or two, there's silence on Yosuke's end. He almost can't believe what he's hearing- like he can't make out if this is an elaborate prank or not. He's waiting for the punchline, but it doesn't come, and his shoulders slack.]
That's... messed...
[He hasn't had to think about this stuff for long enough that his sleuth skills feel lacking at the moment.]
So assuming this thief is telling the truth... Palaces, huh? So all they have to do is make the person who made 'em confront their shadow, right? What's linking all of it together? There's no fog in Tokyo, right? Has anything been happening in the news up there?
No, it's different here. [Yu stands up. He's become antsy now that he talks about this.]
The Thief who was hurt, he has to steal the treasure from the palace. Their shadow... has become so distorted that person can't face themselves anymore- their shadow is way too corrupted for a face off. So, with stealing the treasure, they make palace crumble.
If my guess is correct, they use phones to fix this. He tried finding my palace. But since I faced my shadow, I didn't have one.
[Yu turns on the news and scowls-] As for the news, apparently the thieves made the teacher at our school confess his crimes by using this method. He admitted publically that he abused students and molested girls. It was all over the news when I fist came here. [He turns the TV off.]
[This actually sounds... kind of cool, in a really messed up sort of way. Not that Yosuke should be excited to hear about it, considering all the pain they went through to oust the fog from Inaba, but it's more the challenge of figuring things out than actually participating that's getting him.
There's a thud on his computer chair, the sound of whish as he starts typing away at something, trying to pull up that news article about the teacher.]
So by going after the treasure, they stop the shadow. That's totally different from what we were dealing with. I don't think they're connected. You think that shadows exist even if the fog doesn't? Maybe it's just a part of people, no matter what you do, but the fog was just like... I dunno, the way of making it appear in Inaba. Maybe there are other ways too.
[Wow. That teacher was a major scumbag.]
Huh. I had an idea. If it's phones...that stuff is easier to track. Like in those movies! Dude. If you get a close enough, turn your contact app on. That'll grab his basic info.
So... you're saying that it's not the same like in Inaba? I didn't... [Yu bit his lip-] I, we, didn't fail, right?
[He needs to hear it. Yu needs to be told that all the fight they did had some purpose.
His voice becomes more calm and quieter as talks:] I'm scared to think about it... that maybe, somewhere along the way, I didn't do something right. That the fog slipped by us, changed its form and got worse.
[There's thud on Yu's side as well, as he leans his forehead on the table.] I thought about doing that. But. Remember how hard it was for us to hide the fact that we were going in and out of the TV? I don't want to make it even more difficult for him by finding out who he is.
Don't think so, man. There haven't been any deaths or anything here. No one even worries about the heavy rain anymore. I can't believe that what we did... didn't change things for the good. Weren't we being tested, anyway? Like... maybe Tokyo is being tested too, or something.
[He could completely understand Yu's concerns as to something similar happening. But Yosuke can't subscribe to the belief that they didn't change the world for the better, because it would invalidate so much of what they've done, so much of how strong their friendships are. It's just not in his fiber to believe it.]
Well, your call in the end anyway. Whoever that thief is, they picked you, out of all people in the world out there. Aren't there like... millions of people in Tokyo at any time? Like. It's almost kinda fishy that you just happen to have went through all that stuff here and then get thrown into the same thing over there. If it were me, I'd be damn nosy about anyone who approached me and talked about shadows. Anyway, hang in there man. Don't get involved if you don't wanna.
Maybe. [Yu sighs loudly and lifts his head from the desk.] Thank you. I... kind of needed to hear that. Everything that happened with Nanako, Adachi and Ameno-Sagiri- I didn't want it to be meaningless.
[Now that that was out of the way, Yu's natural curiosity came back. Why is this happening here? Why are there shadows, is there fog and if there's not, how does everything work?]
Hmm? You think that they came to me because they know me? [That took him off guard. He didn't even think about that possibility.] But, that's almost impossible. I don't have any close friends here. People rather talk about me than to me, you know. The only person I talked to more than "goodbye, good morning" is a guy from 2nd year.
[...could it be him? Or is this really a coincidence?]
[He holds back what he's about to say, but gives into the impulsiveness of it anyway.]
To be actually... kinda fair, man. You were pretty unapproachable at first. If you didn't save me from that garbage can, I don't know if we'd be where we are today. You literally saved me from a life of trash.
Not that you're approachable, dude. People are just afraid of what they don't know. That was kinda the point of the fog, right?
Anyway- I dunno but... uhhhh... chances are it's not completely random. Strangers just don't show up outta nowhere being all like "help me, Yu-kun, I'm a damsel in distress!" Well, unless they're Rise-chan. Heh. Don't tell her I said that bee tee dubs.
Also, I am totally not okay with you getting a new best friend over there. So don't even think about it. Especially with any creepy 2nd years.
[Yosuke... at one point you were the creepy 2nd year.]
Hmm... Chie didn't have a problem talking to me right from the start. [Yes, that's a small pout in his voice. But he's joking mostly.]
I don't know, I didn't tell him my name and he didn't seem to know mine either. So yeah. Also, [Yosuke can't see him smirk, but he can guess,] your impression of Rise is really bad.
[At the last part, Yu laughs loudly-] He's not my best friend! No one can beat magician that brought colors to the world. [He'd leave Yosuke to bask into that compliment. But Yu wouldn't be Yu if he didn't tease him even more-]
Are you jealous Yosuke-kun?[His "girly" voice is something that Yu knows Yosuke hates with passion.]

How's Tokyo treating you?
no subject
Well... it has been uneventful- school, part-time job, every single student gossiping about me. Until last night.
[How does he explain this to Yosuke without it sounding weird.]
You... won't judge me, right? Because, what I did was both stupid and right thing to do, as it turns out.
